COVID-19 was tough on everyone, and your car could have suffered as well. With lockdowns in place, your BMW may not have been driven as much as it was previously. BMW maintenance today is as essential as ever, so you don’t experience a problem when you get back on the road, and we’ve got all the bases covered. Of course, if you simply want a BMW upgrade now that you have your stimulus check, we’ve got you covered there as well.

Your Most Important Maintenance Checks

There are several maintenance checks that you should be conducting regularly anyway, but especially after the year we had, your car could be in need. Just like our bodies, cars need exercise and fuel. If they sit dormant for too long in Denver, they’re going to be rusty. Some of those maintenance checks include the following.

An oil change

You should change your BMW’s oil every 5,000 miles (or as specified otherwise in your owner’s manual), even if the manufacturer’s suggestion is to wait longer intervals. If you were on lockdown, you might not have driven 5,000 miles, but you should still have the oil changed. Fresh oil will outperform oil that has sat and settled in your car all year. There’s also a chance your oil was contaminated in some way, so that’s another reason to have it replaced.

A brake fluid flush and exchange

Brake fluid should be flushed and exchanged about every three years. Chances are you’ve lost track over the last year, so you should have it looked at and exchanged if needed. Your brakes should also be inspected to check for wear and tear or just overall rusty performance.

An engine inspection

Again, things could have gotten rusty if you didn’t use your BMW as much during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Having your engine inspected simply ensures it is safe and ready to take to the road once again. Our mechanics can handle any engine repair found during an inspection.

A coolant and antifreeze replacement

You need to check the levels of your coolant and antifreeze. If you have premixed antifreeze, it should be replaced. Otherwise, if the levels are still OK, you could get away with not replacing them quite yet, but simply topping them off instead.

Air and cabin filter changes

Most likely if you haven’t been using your car, the filters won’t be bad, but do you remember the last time you changed them? There’s a chance it was time to change them when lockdowns went into place, so now that you’re on the road again, you’ll need to get that done. If your car was parked outdoors for a prolonged period of time, your filters could have been contaminated from something in the environment, even if the engine wasn’t running.

A transmission service

You don’t want to get halfway to your destination and start having transmission issues. These issues range in severity, with some that are quite noticeable and others that aren’t predictable at all. Have your transmission inspected and conduct the necessary services if needed.

A tire rotation

If you have a standard BMW, you should be rotating your tires at every other oil change. This means you’re doing it at least once per year. If you have an SUV or crossover BMW, you should be rotating the tires at every single oil change, which could be a few times per year. Getting it done now will jumpstart your routine again.

Spark plug replacement

A spark plug misfire could cause serious damage to your engine. We’ll check the spark plugs to see if they have become worn and stiff. If a replacement is necessary, we’ll get it taken care of.

A sunroof drain cleaning

What many BMW owners don’t realize is the sunroof isn’t completely waterproof. There are drains in the front and back of the sunroof that allow small amounts of water to leak out. If your BMW sat in the weather, it’s possible those drains are clogged and about to overflow into the interior of your vehicle.

Of course, this is only a start when it comes to COVID-19 BMW maintenance. Speaking with one of our professionals, you can come up with a priority list for maintaining your car over the next few weeks or months.

What You Can Do on Your Own

There’s not a whole lot of maintenance items you should conduct on your own. Maintaining a BMW requires specialized care, and you want it to get done by a professional in Denver, CO. If you insist on completing some of your maintenance checks on your own, you can check the oil, and possibly change it yourself if you’ve been adequately trained. If you have replaced the coolant and antifreeze by yourself in the past, you could do that on your own as well; however, our highly-trained technicians could notice issues otherwise unnoticed by untrained eyes.

If checking tire pressure is a task you are comfortable with, you could check the pressure and fill them up as needed. Keep in mind there are all the other services that need to be done. Whether you’re hurting financially this year or just have that DIY bone in your body, you can detail the inside of your BMW, wash the outside, polish the rims, and complete all of those necessary details that need to be taken care of. All of those other big maintenance checks should be conducted by the professionals at Paddock Imports. Why?
